Abstract

Background Women and men are subject to various different pressures in the world of work. The demands placed on women are regularly higher than those placed on men. Additionally, with the exceptions of accidents at work and occupational diseases, the data on women’s work-related health indicators point towards comparatively higher levels of psychological stress. Aim To formulate theory-based and data-based recommendations with the goal of reducing genderbased inequality of health prospects. Method Based on research of relevant statistics and reports, the current data basis on manifestations, influencing factors and consequences of gender-related health differences in the working world will be described. Results The data collected give a basis for the formulation of cornerstones for gender-competent design of operational structures and processes which promote good health. Discussion Gender-competent promotion of good health must be based on gender theory considerations and take into account the interfaces between the working and living environment. Additionally, the aim of achieving sustainable improvements to health suggests the need for critique of the pre-existing, androcentrically structured economy.
