Abstract

Many cities have grown in the course of industrialization and became places of integration through labor demand. However, due to the zoning of cities, the shift towards knowledge intensive economy, and because of market forces (production generates a lower return on land) the production sector has declined significantly in larger cities, especially in old industrial agglomerations. On the other hand, new planning concepts, industrial brownfields and low-emission production technologies are potentials that may enable a reorientation towards manufacturing. This article discusses if the so-called urban production can contribute to a reinforcement of structurally weak cities and can enable the Charter of Leipzig’s demand for a mixed-use city.
