Abstract

Enterprises constructing or reconstructing their offices as open space offices not only expect cost reductions but also better work. But how the employees concerned perceive and experience open space offices and what impact the ‘new office’ has on their work and well-being is both ambiguous and controversial up to now. On the basis of a mixed-methods survey, this article explores how satisfied employees are with their open space offices and which factors influence their satisfaction. The findings reveal that a slender majority of them is satisfied with the new work environment whereas a quarter is very dissatisfied. However, hardly any person interviewed expressed total satisfaction or total dissatisfaction. The overall job environment satisfaction proves to be the result of an individual weighting of several factors. Beyond the features of work space and its design, the factors of work organization, course of change process, individual adaptation to the new spatial environment (‘work space learning’) and options of individual space utilization play a major part.
