Abstract

For more than 20 years, the activation paradigm has been informing labor market policies in Germany. The activation paradigm came along with a specific focus in labor market research. At the same time, the focus of labor market research contributed to activation policies. In the meantime, there are increasing signs that the activation paradigm has been exhausted for research. However, it is unclear to date which new paradigms could replace the activation paradigm. The paper presents possible candidates for new paradigms in labor market research which could replace the activation paradigm and assesses their potential for future research about labor market policies.
