Live-in and Burn-out?: Migrantische Pflegekräfte in deutschen Haushalten

Abstract

Currently German families often draw on caregivers from Eastern Europe for the performance of home care work. Due to weak regulation and the nature of the work the caregivers have to negotiate their employment conditions with the families, some of them also with the clients themselves. Using a design that has been developed in sociology of work, it is examined which power resources are available to them in their employment and occupation relationships. The result is that migrant caregivers tend to be in a situation of structural powerlessness.
