Abstract

Michael Arthur and Douglas Hall with their seminal theses on the boundaryless and the protean career have prompted debates on a fundamental re-arrangement of institutionalized career patterns, i.e. an erosion of the so-called organization career, and the emergence of careers patterned by the self-organizing and self-management capacities of individuals. This article, however, argues that the boundaryless and the protean career theses systematically under-estimate the continuing importance of organizations in the patterning of careers, and that they do not sufficiently conceptualize the relation between organizational and individual career management. Therefore, this article develops a differentiating approach to the analysis of changes in career patterns.
