Abstract

Innovation work is increasingly being standardized by formal organization processes, which intend to produce more effective, less risky and predictable innovations. On the basis of qualitative empirical research this article demonstrates how standardization of innovation can cause new tensions in the relationship between the formal and informal and how subjects cope with the new resulting paradoxes in everyday innovation work. Our research draws on organizational theory and the concept of capacities for labor. Consistent with this perspective we suggest new principles for alternative agile forms of standardization.
