Wages, Unions, the Youth Training Scheme and the Young Workers Scheme

Abstract

Establishment wages are modeled in order to investigate the effect of participation in the one-year Youth Training Scheme and the Young Workers Scheme. Among the explanatory variables, which include measures of human capital and industrial type, age, and ownership, are a union recognition variable and a union bargaining variable. The data used are taken from the Yopelm survey of 1984-85. Participation in both of the schemes is found to decrease the wages of adults and of certain youth groups by amounts ranging from 5 percent to 16 percent. The union wage effect is generally found to be less than 10 percent. Copyright 1989 by Scottish Economic Society.
