Understanding Shiminhua in Chinese Greater Bay Area: Internalizing urban identity and negotiating place attachment

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the following question: How does the process of urbanization of rural–urban migrants (shiminhua) unfold in Chinese cities? It focuses on the urbanization of people in the contextualized concept of shiminhua. This paper mainly adopted qualitative methods of focus group discussions (FGDs) and semi‐structured interviews in three cities in the Greater Bay Area of China (GBA). The results indicate that shiminhua is an incremental process of gaining internalized urban identity and negotiated place attachment. It implies that successful shiminhua process in the GBA consists of efforts from multiple levels of stakeholders. Regional policy and urban governance strategy should understand shiminhua more comprehensively to facilitate successful shiminhua process. Este artículo trata de investigar la siguiente cuestión: ¿Cómo se desarrolla el proceso de aclimatación urbana de los migrantes rurales a la ciudad (shiminhua) en las ciudades chinas? Se centra en la aclimatación urbana de las personas en el concepto contextualizado de la shiminhua. En este artículo se utilizaron principalmente métodos cualitativos con grupos focales y entrevistas semiestructuradas en tres ciudades de la Gran Área de la Bahía (GAB) de China. Los resultados indican que la shiminhua es un proceso gradual de interiorización de la identidad urbana y de negociación del apego al lugar. Esto implica que el éxito del proceso de la shiminhua en la GBA requiere los esfuerzos de múltiples niveles de partes interesadas. La política regional y la estrategia de gobernanza urbana deberían comprender por completo la shiminhua para facilitar el éxito del proceso. 本稿では、中国の都市において、農村から都市への移住者が都会的になる過程 (shiminhua)はどのように展開しているのかという問題を検討する。shiminhuaの文脈化された概念における、人々の都市化に焦点を当てる。本稿では主に、フォーカス・グループ・ディスカッションによる定性的手法と中国のグレーターベイエリア (GBA)の三つの都市における半構造化インタビューを用いた。結果から、shiminhuaとは、内在化された都市アイデンティティと交渉による場所への愛着を獲得する漸進的プロセスであることが示された。これは、GBAにおけるshiminhuaの成功のプロセスが、複数のレベルの利害関係者の努力から成ることを意味する。地域政策と都市ガバナンスの戦略は、shiminhuaのプロセスの成功を実現するために、shiminhuaをより包括的に理解すべきである。
