Spatial distribution of logistics services in Brazil: A potential market analysis

Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the present and long‐term spatial distribution of the logistics sector in Brazil. The logistics potential mapping model (MapLog), inspired by Krugman's core‐periphery model, will serve as an analytical tool to verify the long‐term spatialization of the logistics sector. The results point to a change within five decades (2015–2065) of the locational pattern of the logistics sector focused on industry but not for the logistics sector focused on agriculture. The MapLog model proved to be effective, indicating the regions where the logistics sector will intensify its activities over the next few years, thus putting pressure on the local transport infrastructure. El objetivo principal de este artículo es investigar la distribución espacial actual y a largo plazo del sector logístico en Brasil. El modelo de mapeo de potencial logístico (MapLog), inspirado en el modelo de núcleo‐periferia de Krugman, servirá como herramienta analítica para verificar la espacialización a largo plazo del sector logístico. Los resultados apuntan a un cambio en cinco décadas (2015–2065) del patrón de localización del sector logístico centrado en la industria, pero no en el sector logístico centrado en la agricultura. El modelo MapLog ha demostrado su eficacia, indicando las regiones en las que el sector logístico intensificará sus actividades en los próximos años, ejerciendo así presión sobre la infraestructura de transporte local. 本稿の主な目的は、ブラジルにおける物流セクターの、現在および長期間の空間的分布を調査することである。Krugman による Core‐Peripheryモデルから着想を得て作成したMapLogモデル(物流の可能性をマッピングするモデル)を分析ツールとして用いて物流セクターの長期間の空間的な分布を確認する。結果から、工業を中心とした物流セクターの立地パターンの2015~2065年の50年間での変化が示されたが、農業を中心とした物流セクターでは変化がなかった。MapLogモデルが有効であることが証明され、今後数年間で物流セクターが活動を強化し、地域の輸送インフラに圧力をかけるであろう地域が示された。
