Abstract

The paper analyzes one of the few art-critical articles by I. A. Goncharov “The painting of G. Kramskoy “Christ in the Desert”. This important stage in the formation of art criticism in Russia contains the author’s thoughts about the genres of Sacred History, about artistry and realism. The article is also interesting in the hidden controversy with F. M. Dostoevsky about the principles of evaluating paintings on Sacred history.
