Privacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

The extensive collection and general processing of our personal data that is necessary for the operation of artificial intelligence raises important concerns regarding the compatibility of technology with the privacy of individuals. A wealth of data being used within artificial intelligence constitutes personal data (Igglezakis [1]), while many of these data fall under special categories (Article 9(1) GDPR) (sensitive data). In this respect, for the functioning of artificial intelligence, the collection and processing of large data sets, which are difficult to place under the control of data subjects, is required. The reliance of artificial intelligence on data has created a critical paradox: while a greater volume of data enhances the accuracy of artificial intelligence outcomes, it also heightens the risk of privacy violations by malicious actors (Khatri [2]) seeking to retrieve sensitive information (Dilmegani [3]).
