Abstract

The use of incubators to maintain normothermia is a cornerstone of neonatal care [1]. Hypothermia in the premature infant can result in poor weight gain and metabolic stress [2,3]. Babies maintain normothermia via hypothalamic control mechanisms, creating warmth through shivering and non-shivering mechanisms [4]. In the preterm or growth restricted infant, these mechanisms are immature, placing them at additional risk. In lower-resource settings, hypothermia is associated with significant mortality especially in these higher risk patients [5].
