Die Evangelikalen und die Politik in Brasilien: Die Relevanz des religiösen Wandels in Lateinamerika

Abstract

Seit den 1970er Jahren vollzieht sich in Lateinamerika ein religiöser Wandel: Der Anteil der Bevölkerung katholischen Glaubens geht stark zurück, der evangelikalen Glaubens nimmt rasant zu. Beide Entwicklungen sind miteinander kausal verknüpft. Im Zuge dieser demographischen Transformation büßt die katholische Kirche ihre besondere Stellung in der Gesellschaft und ihren privilegierten Zugang zur Politik ein. An ihre Stelle tritt eine Großzahl vielfältiger und autonomer evangelikaler, vor allem pfingstkirchlicher und neo-pfingstkirchlicher Kirchen. Dass die evangelikalen Kirchen ein so großes soziales Gewicht bekommen, hängt unter anderem mit ihrer Bedeutung als "Problemlöserinnen" in prekären Gesellschaftssektoren zusammen. Dieses Engagement dehnen die Glaubensgemeinschaften in wachsendem Maße auf den Bereich der Politik aus. In Brasilien kommt die Steigerung sozialer Relevanz und politischer Macht der evangelikalen Kirchen in besonders markanter Weise zum Vorschein: Seit dem 1. Januar 2019 führt mit Jair Messias Bolsonaro ein ehemaliger Militär die Regierungsgeschäfte, der sich von einem evangelikalen Pastor im Jordan taufen ließ.
