Abstract

Die empirischeWirtschaftsforschung hat in Deutschland im Verlauf der letzten Jahre deutlich an Boden gegenüber der internationalen Konkurrenz gewonnen. Einen wichtigen Anteil daran hatte die Weiterentwicklung der außeruniversitären Forschung.Dabei haben insbesondere die Institute der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft (WGL) den harten akademischen Wettbewerb und die scharfen Kriterien ihrer regelmäßigen Evaluierung durch externe Bewertungskommissionen in eine erhebliche Leistungssteigerung umgesetzt. Um diese Dynamik zu erhalten und gleichermaßen für die Fachwelt als ernsthafter Ansprechpartner sowie für Politik und Öffentlichkeit als umsichtiger Ratgeber dienen zu können, werden sie in ihrer Arbeit eine sinnvolle Balance zwischen fokussierter Forschung und breiter Kompetenz in der wirtschaftspolitischen Beratung verfolgen und ihr jeweiliges Profil imWettbewerb stetig weiter schärfen müssen.Wie dies konkret aussehen kann, soll im Folgenden am Beispiel des RWI Essen erläutert werden.
