Wasserstoff im Verkehr: Anwendungen, Perspektiven und Handlungsoptionen

Abstract

Angesichts endlicher fossiler Energieressourcen und eines drohenden Klimawandels stellt sich die Frage, welchen Beitrag der Einsatz der Wasserstofftechnologie zur Versorgungssicherheit und zur Reduzierung der Emissionen von Kohlendioxid (CO2) beitragen kann. Wasserstoff stellt keine primäre Energiequelle dar, sondern ist ein Energieträger, mit dessen Hilfe Erzeugung und Verwendung von Energie zeitlich und räumlich getrennt werden kann. Er lässt sich in der Stromwirtschaft und insbesondere im Verkehr einsetzen. Gegenwärtig werden im Verkehrsbereich noch fast vollständig fossile Energieträger eingesetzt, was dazu führt, dass der Verkehrssektor rund 21 Prozent der CO2-Emissionen in Deutschland verursacht. Hinzu kommt, dass das weltweite Verkehrsaufkommen in den nächsten Jahrzehnten - insbesondere getrieben durch die bevölkerungsreichen und schnell wachsenden BRIC-Staaten (Brasilien, Russland, Indien und China) - stark zunehmen wird. Es gilt daher, die Nutzung erneuerbarer Energien auch für den Verkehr technologisch zu erschließen und Substitutionsmöglichkeiten zu fossilen Kraftstoffen zu schaffen.
