Market Quality of Pacific Northwest Pears

Abstract

The largest volume of pears sold in the United States is grown in the states of Washington and Oregon. Indeed, during 2006-2008, 69% of the total pear production in the United States was concentrated in these two states (USDA, 2008). In most instances, pears sold domestically are transported to populated centers in the west, mid-west, and east regions of the country. During shipping and display it is possible for fruit to be injured. Kupferman et al. (1992) reported that damages to pears can appear during packing, after storage or in the marketplace. These damages might represent losses to the industry equivalent to $1.5 million for Anjou pears on average for 1990 and 1991. Pear growers in the Northwest would like to optimize methods to ensure visual and edible quality to consumers. A first step is to determine the quality of fresh pears currently in grocery stores, and identify external quality differences across states, months of the year and varieties.
