Which Financial Reporting Standards Does the European Union Need?

Abstract

After years of laissez-fair approaches, economists and policy-makers are now looking back at industrial policies to support long-lasting recovery in the European Union. European institutions also acknowledge industrial policies as key for implementing an economic model based on sustainable development and social market economy, which are two of the founding principles of the EU. Many scholars have highlighted that financial reporting plays an important role in constructing socio-economic reality. Accordingly, this paper discusses whether current financial reporting regulation in the EU has the characteristics needed to support longterm investments for industrial recovery as long as an economic model based on social market economy and sustainable development. Financial reporting regulation as well as industrial policies are part of the EU’s competences. It is therefore key to determine whether current financial reporting standards in the EU are consistent with industrial policies and, more widely, with the founding principles of the Union.
