De kennisonderneming: metaforen van organisatie-onderzoek

Abstract

De organisatiewetenschappen bewegen zich tussen twee polen. Zij zijn net als andere wetenschappen gericht op de ontwikkeling van objectieve kennis op basis van waarneming. De kennis is echter niet alleen een doel op zich. Organisatiewetenschappen zijn ook ontwerpwetenschappen die ons ten dienste staan bij het oplossen van problemen en het verbeteren van structuren en processen in de praktijk. De ontwerppraktijk vormt weer een nieuwe bron voor het ontwikkelen van ideeën en het testen van theorieën. Daarmee is de kennisontwikkeling een cyclisch proces, waarin men heen en weer pendelt tussen algemene kennis en de specifieke (locale) ontwerppraktijk. Deze tweepoligheid is een rijke bron van discussie en controverse over de methoden die de organisatie-onderzoek(st)er ten dienste staan. In deze verkenning wordt ingegaan op dit spanningsveld door de opbouw van kennis te beschouwen als een onderneming waarin doelen worden gesteld, pragmatische compromissen worden gesloten en risico''s worden gelopen. De verschillende visies op de kennisonderneming worden aan de hand van metaforen geschetst. Ten slotte wordt aangegeven op welke wijze de onderzoeker zijn of haar eigen “ondernemingsplan” vastlegt in het onderzoekontwerp.
