Modes de vie et surpeuplement des logements : la situation des immigrants ages au Canada, 1991

Abstract

Les immigrants ages qui arrivent au Canada ne sont pas admissibles aux paiements de transfert gouvernementaux ou a l'aide sociale pendant une periode pouvant aller jusqu'à dix ans. C'est pourquoi nombre d'entre eux choisissent de vivre avec des personnes apparentees ou leurs repondants dans des logements encombres deja habites par les membres de trois generations ou plus. Les preferences culturelles ont egalement un role a jouer a cet egard. La propension des groupes d'immigrants originaires de regions en developpement a vivre dans des menages formes de trois generations ou plus peut etre jusqu'à 18 fois plus elevee que celle des Canadiens de naissance et des immigrants issus de pays developpes faisant partie du meme groupe d'age. Le revenu moyen, le pourcentage de personnes qui touchent des prestations de securite de la vieillesse, le pourcentage de veufs et de veuves ainsi que la duree de residence au Canada sont des facteurs lies de facon significative aux proportions d'immigrants qui vivent dans ces conditions et expliquent environ 84 % et 81 % de l'ecart entre les lieux de naissance pour les hommes et les femmes respectivement.
