COVID-19, isolamento social e violência doméstica: evidências iniciais para o Brasil

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted several governments around the world to adopt measures of social isolation in order to stem the spread of the virus. Since then, many socioeconomic impacts of these measures have been discussed. Among these is the increase in the number of cases of domestic violence. The aim of this article is to investigate the impact of social isolation measures on complaints of domestic violence in the state of Rio de Janeiro. For this purpose, the instrumental variables method is used. The results indicate that there is an increase of an average of 2 reports of domestic violence per day, in each municipality and on each day. Additionally, the results suggest that there may be impact variations according to the length of the quarantine period.
