Reproductive behavior of the russian population in 2023[Репродуктивное Поведение Населения России В 2023г]

The relevance of the study is justified by the continuing decline in the birth rate in Russia. The aim is to study the reproductive behaviour of the Russian population. The objective of the study is to assess the dynamics of fertility based on macrostatistics data, including separately for urban and rural populations, and on the results of a sample survey. ISAF RANEPA conducted the fourth round of the survey "Man, Family, Society" from March 23 to May 3, 2023. The survey covered 9508 respondents aged 18-72 years, sample is representative of Russia. According to the results, in 2023 the share of respondents who do not want to have children decreased slightly compared to 2020, but it remains at a high level of about 20%. Factors that increase the probability of a negative answer to the question about the desire to have children are associated with deprivation (poverty, lack of a partner) and/or modernization values. At the same time, intentions to have a child soon are high, more than 60% of respondents stated that they "definitely" or "rather" plan to have a child in the next 3 years. There are similar trends in the birth rate of urban and rural populations: a decrease in the first births total coefficient, an increase in the average mother age at the first child birth, a reduction in the interval between the average ages of different order of child birth mothers. The peak of the age curve of the rural and urban population falls on the 25-29 years age group. We revealed the differences between the birth rates indicating significant shifts in the births calendar, an increased tendency to postpone to an older age the first childbirth. The postponement of the first births and an increase in the number of third births and births of higher order characterize Russian rural population recently. Compared with the urban, rural population turned out to be more susceptible to government measures to support fertility.
