Abstract

The goal of the work was to analyze the ways of the forging of English identity in the Middle Ages. Its components were the tribal identities of German-speaking (‘AngloSaxon’) population and geographical concept of ‘Britain’ (Latin ‘Britannia’) that had emerged in the Classical age. After the departure of the Roman troops and collapse of imperial administration the early fifth century at least part of the Brittonic elite kept the idea of the island as a political entity.
