Abstract

May,1836 Louis Keyserling, the younger brother of the famous naturalist Alexander Kayzerling, went to St. Petersburg to attend the newly opened College of Law. The elder brother has already taken place in the Russian service, with a choice of junior congratulated " the fastest way for ambitious plans for the young man" and assured parents that the way "most appropriate". According to family tradition, preserved in the belief that Louis failed his exams because of "insufficient knowledge of the Russian language". Friends and parents tried to comfort him that next time he will be ready to better exam and he will find a powerful patron of the German nobility, for example, Count Nikolai Lamzdorf. "It was all in vain. Luis was inconsolable, his excited state brought him to the nervous fever and after a few months, just celebrated his 18th anniversary, the young man died".Classification-JEL: R00, Z0
