¿Es el computador un medio eficaz para mejorar el rendimiento académico de los jóvenes en Chile?

Abstract

El objetivo de esta investigación consiste en indagar en los potenciales efectos del uso del computador en el desempeño académico de los estudiantes en Chile. Utilizando la información proveniente de las encuestas SIMCE es posible identificar el efecto que tiene el uso de este equipamiento en el resultado de la prueba SIMCE. Mediante una estimación paramétrica por mínimos cuadrados ordinarios y a través de la incorporación de una variable muda para controlar por el uso de un computador se identifica el impacto de éste. Dado que este enfoque impone fuertes supuestos en términos funcionales y que además hay selectividad en el uso del computador se procede a implementar el estimador matching propensity score. Los resultados muestran sistemáticamente que existe un retorno (pequeño) asociado al uso del computador sobre el desempeño académico del estudiante. Esto abre nuevas posibilidades para alcanzar mejorar significativas en la calidad de la educación en Chile, tarea que aún se encuentra en este país.
