Threats to Inclusive Growth in India: Unemployment and Informal Sector

Abstract

The creation of decent jobs outside of agriculture is one of the largest challenges that confront the policy makers trying to achieve ‘faster, sustainable and more inclusive growth’. The Indian economy has been growing at unprecedented rates, but it has been characterized by jobless growth and informatization of job opportunities in the organized sector. The paper attempts to evaluate the employment intensity of output growth through an examination of employment elasticity, and the potential for employment generation and decent work during the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17).
