Abstract

This paper discusses the concepts of and Islamic rulings concerning various issues relating to marriage and divorce. The aim is to outline the purposes, goals and benefits of marriage; pillars and conditions of marriage; some dos and don’ts of marriage; causes of marriage breakdown and success factors in marriage; marriage discord and ways of handling it; the what, why and how of divorce; and finally suggest ways by which the institution of marriage would be safeguarded and marriage breakdown leading to widespread divorce be curbed among couples in Muslim societies.
