Abstract

Questo contributo esamina il sistema bancario italiano, le sue caratteristiche e la sua evoluzione a partire dalla metà degli anni Novanta. L’Italia ha un sistema bancario con tipologie diverse di istituti di credito e con dimensioni differenti. Dagli anni Novanta la globalizzazione economico-finanziaria e la relativa liberalizzazione hanno determinato a livello internazionale e, quindi, anche in Italia una maggiore concorrenza fra gli operatori del settore bancario. La riforma delle banche popolari è una conseguenza di questa spinta verso la liberalizzazione e della globalizzazione. La spinta dell’Unione Europea verso l’Unione bancaria, a partire dal 2014, è un altro fattore importante che ha indubbiamente influito sull’assetto del sistema bancario italiano. Un ultimo aspetto esaminato riguarda la relazione fra settore bancario e crescita dell’economia. Tra il 2000 e il 2007 l’Italia ha avuto un tasso di crescita del PIL in diminuzione. Si sostiene che questo risultato negativo in parte è da attribuire anche al modesto livello di efficienza del sistema bancario italiano.
