An Evaluation of the New Child-Support Guidelines : Good News and Bad News

Abstract

The new Federal Child Support Guidelines came into effect on May 1, 1997. Henceforth, child support awards depend only upon the non-custodial parent's income, the number of children of the marriage and the province of residence. We present a simulation analysis which identifies winners and losers from the introduction of the new system.
