Abstract

[This work is an English translation of a peer-reviewed article originally published in Portuguese]. There is a lack of quantitative data characterizing science communication on social media in Brazil. The same holds true for pseudoscience. In this article, we present an investigation into the growth rates of some of the most prominent Brazilian science communication and pseudoscience YouTube channels in recent years. A total of 6,007 videos were analyzed, distributed across eight different channels. Our results show that, on average, the number of views and subscriptions on science communication channels tripled during the period, whereas views on pseudoscience channels increased fivefold, and subscriptions increased sixfold.
