The legal needs of those living with chronic hepatitis B in Australia: A Rapid Review of the Literature

Abstract

Hepatitis B is Australia’s most significant communicable disease. In 2018, it was estimated that there were approximately 230,000 people with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) living in Australia. The overarching aim of this evidence-based review was to collect published evidence through a comprehensive search of the current research available on the legal needs of patients living with hepatitis B in Australia in order to identify key barriers to accessing justice, legal information, advice and support as well as supporting a Delphi process of people with lived and learned expertise on Hepatitis B. This process concluded that there are significant legal barriers for people with hepatitis B while this article shows that the evidence base regarding the legal needs of this population was not strong enough to support action to close the gap between current practice and the hepatitis B testing and treatment goals in the National Hepatitis B Strategy.
