Abstract

Using regeneration as an interdisciplinary and multilevel theoretical framework and thematic analysis of online news media, we have investigated tourism developments in Ukraine during the first year following Russia’s full-scale military invasion in February 2022. Adopting a regeneration perspective allowed us to discern the mechanisms through which tourism, as a complex system resembling living systems in nature, endures, recovers from war damage, and contributes to the overall recovery of a war-affected country. Our findings indicate that despite the severe damages of war, the country’s tourism system persists, albeit with altered structures and functions, playing a significant role in humanitarian efforts, rehabilitation, community building, in addition to its recreational function. Notably, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) emerge as key actors in the regeneration process, demonstrating resourcefulness and resilience by recognising changing societal needs and rethinking their own potential to meet those needs. Our research expands the limited knowledge base on tourism developments in a wartime context and contributes to a better understanding of broader regeneration processes in tourism and regenerative tourism.
