Exploring the Socio-Cultural and Economic Impacts of Tourism on Rural Communities in Tamil Nadu

Tourism has become a vital driver for economic growth and cultural exchange in Tamil Nadu, particularly in rural areas where traditional customs and livelihoods coexist with increasing visitor numbers(N. et al., 2024). This study employs qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observations, to assess the socio-cultural and economic effects of tourism on rural communities. Findings reveal that while tourism generates economic benefits such as increased income and job creation, it also presents challenges like seasonal fluctuations and over-reliance on the industry. Socio-culturally, tourism fosters cultural interaction and empowers marginalized groups, especially women, through entrepreneurship. However, concerns arise regarding the erosion of traditional values and customs. Environmental impacts are evident, with increased pressure on natural resources and infrastructure, although eco-tourism initiatives have spurred conservation efforts. The study underscores the need for community-focused and sustainable tourism frameworks that align economic benefits with cultural preservation and environmental sustainability. Inclusive policies that engage local stakeholders in decision-making are essential for ensuring tourism development aligns with community priorities and long-term sustainability.
