Abstract

This paper examines desirability bias in self-reported turnover intention in survey-based research. Intention to quit a job is an important outcome variable in the research on human resource management in the public sector, and studies tend to use self-reported intention from surveys. However, since revealing an intention to quit might result in uncomfortable feelings or unfavorable employment conditions, respondents may hesitate to provide truthful answers. This paper examines the potential desirability bias by utilizing the list experiment in Vietnam. A survey involving approximately 1,100 respondents was conducted in May 2021 with respondents from both public and private sectors. The results reveal that respondents in the public sector tend to substantially underreport their intention to leave their jobs, while a moderate level of over-reporting is observed among respondents in the private sector.
