Abstract

Cerita ini dimulai tahun 1939 ketika Bernard Garrett masih seorang anak kecil yang membersihkan sepatu, keinginan Bernard Garrett yang ingin belajar dan keingin-tauan yang sangat besar, dimulai dengan mendengarkan klien-klien yang berbicara tentang bisnis atau orang-orang disekitarnya, Bernard mulai belajar sedikit demi sedikit. Bernard selalu memiliki ketertarikan dengan Real Estate, melihat peluang yang besar terlepas dari lingkungan yang sangat diskriminatif di Los Angeles, Bernard berpidah dari Texas di tahun 1954. Di LA Bernard bertemu dengan Joe Morris, seorang pengusaha with deep pockets dan sebuah klub the Plantation Club. Bernard menjelaskan rencananya mengenai membeli, merenovasi dan menyewa rumah di white areas untuk black middle class yang semakin bertumbuh di kota.
