Sistem Ekonomi Merkantilisme

Abstract

Merkantilisme adalah doktrin ekonomi yang berlaku di sebagian besar Eropa selama abad ke-17 dan 18. Merkantilisme termasuk dalam ‘prasejarah’ ekonomi, sebelum menjadi bidang studi.1 Merkantilisme adalah suatu teori ekonomi yang menyatakan bahwa kesejahteraan suatu negara hanya ditentukan oleh banyaknya aset atau modal yang disimpan oleh negara yang bersangkutan, dan bahwa besarnya volume perdagangan global teramat sangat penting. Aset ekonomi atau modal negara dapat digambarkan secara nyata dengan jumlah kapital (mineral berharga, terutama emas maupun komoditas lainnya) yang dimiliki oleh negara dan modal ini bisa diperbesar jumlahnya dengan meningkatkan ekspor dan mencegah (sebisanya) impor sehingga neraca perdagangan dengan negara lain akan selalu positif. Merkantilisme mengajarkan bahwa pemerintahan suatu negara harus mencapai tujuan ini dengan melakukan perlindungan terhadap perekonomiannya, dengan mendorong ekspor dan mengurangi impor. Kebijakan ekonomi yang bekerja dengan mekanisme seperti inilah yang dinamakan dengan sistem ekonomi merkantilisme.
