Abstract

We report on the psychometric properties of the Brief Resilience (BRS) scale (Smith et al., 2008), the Counselling Impact on Academic Outcomes (CIAO) scale (Wallace, 2011, 2012), and Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM) scale for use in tapping emotional, academic, and social factors respectively in students transitioning to higher education. We analyse their properties in a sample of mainly first year undergraduate students in a selective Irish University (N=1,162). We find properties of reliability for the BRS, and we find properties of reliability but very limited validity for CIAO. We found a three-factor structure to the PSSM and otherwise find properties of both validity and reliability for PSSM.
