Abstract

We study a decade of achievement gaps 5th through 10th grade by parental income and education in Norway using administrative population data. Norway is a wealthy and egalitarian country with a homogeneous educational system, yet achievement gaps between students at the 90th and 10th percentiles of parental income and between students with parents who have at least a master and at most a high school degree are large (0.55-0.93 and 0.70-0.99 standard deviations, respectively), increasing by grade level. Gaps are equivalent to approximately 2-2.5 years of schooling. Income achievement gaps increased by about 10% of a standard deviation over the 11-year time period, whereas education achievement gaps remained stable. This suggests that the choice of socioeconomic indicator measure may explain why researchers disagree on trends in achievement gaps.
