Abstract

We intend to account for the procyclical behavior of labour productivity. Therefore, we model an imperfect competitive firm and analyze adjustement of labour input when it faces demand fluctuations. For given capital services, we stress the distinction between labour force and labour utilization degree which includes working time and labour utilization rate. This rate describes the employees' variable effort during the business cycle. Thus, the firm is able to adapt to demand fluctuations by varying fully flexible utilization rate in order to compensate the working time and especially the labour force quasi-fixity
