Abstract

(VA)In terms of population, the hierarchy of the Bolivian territories is clearly dominated by the tripole composed of La Paz, Santa Cruz and Cochabamba. History suggests that this tripole emerged recently as the result of an original combination of factors including natural resources, more or less favourable “atmosphere”, and cumulative processes. The present situation could be unstable, in an evolution showing continuities, ruptures and even reversals. The data describing the Bolivian territories in terms of production, exports and FDI reveal that the economic domination of the tripole is more probably due to a size effect than to a specific economic superiority, and show that this domination is weakened by the economic weight of other territories. But these data can only give a partial vision of the situation.
