Le Profil economique des micro-entreprises informelles des villes de butare, gisenyi et ruhengeri (Rwanda)

Abstract

The extension of the ILO informal sector project to secondary cities in the country was prepared by this 1986 census and survey of 82 artisans in Butare, Gisenyi and Ruhengeri. The study covers both the characteristics of age, training, experience, etc. and the economic activity (workshop, finance, equipment, inputs, sales, income, etc.) The artisans tend to be recent rural migrants to the secondary cities with little education, thus with little access to information. Training is acquired through apprentice system within the sector. They use hand tools which are made by them. Capital endowment is low and financial market is either non existent or inappropriate. Their product market consists of the modern sector wage workers, and the rural population after the coffee harvest. The artisans are however willing to supply governmental services and modern enterprises and are prepared to improve their know-how. Competition among themselves is tough, and credit facilities are a widespread policy. They do not consider themselves in competition with the modern sector.
