Consumidor Financiero: Diagnóstico y algunas propuestas

Abstract

Este artículo plantea que las habilidades del consumidor financiero son insuficientes para abordar la complejidad asociada a la administración de sus finanzas personales. Esta brecha podría reducir el bienestar de quienes toman decisiones ineficientes y, para algunos segmentos de la industria financiera, podría representar una fuente de poder de mercado que les permita acceder a ganancias superiores a las que obtendrían en un mercado con consumidores sofisticados. Esta brecha también podría afectar la legitimidad de algunos actores de la industria financiera, como ocurrió con las AFP en 2016. A partir de este diagnóstico, se describen las principales iniciativas implementadas en las últimas décadas para apoyar la toma de decisiones del consumidor financiero en Chile, distinguiendo entre medidas que promueven la educación financiera y aquellas orientadas a que el mercado de capitales sea más amigable. El análisis concluye con algunas propuestas que podrían contribuir a mejorar la incidencia y focalización de estos esfuerzos.
