Las cajas municipales de ahorro y crédito: Su experiencia en el micro crédito rural en Perú

Abstract

Las Cajas Municipales de Ahorro y Crédito (CMACs) son las principales proveedoras de micro créditos formales en Perú. En los años 90 sus préstamos a los hogares pobres aumentó substancialmente y fue financiado, de manera principal, por el éxito que ha tenido en la movilización de depósitos. Las CMACs han logrado total sustentabilidad a partir de un contexto macroeconómico favorable; la promoción de intermediación financiera a nivel local; un contexto institucional favorable y el apoyo de la cooperación internacional. Pero estos resultados pueden ponerse en peligro si hay desarrollos institucionales adversos o interferencia política. Por estas razones, es recomendable la privatización de las CMAC.
