Diversificación del Desarrollo Rural en Tailandia

Abstract

A pesar del innegable éxito de Tailandia para aumentar la producción agrícola y el volumen de las exportaciones, el país todavía está haciendo esfuerzos para reducir los altos niveles de desigualdad y pobreza que lo caracterizan, incluyendo la pobreza rural. La causa principal de esta situación radica en los bajos retornos de la producción y el alto riesgo e incertidumbre de la producción agrícola que genera muy bajos salarios para la familia agrícola media. Durante la estación seca, cuando no es posible cultivar la tierra, muchas familias rurales recurren al empleo temporal no-agrícola para generar ingresos adicionales. El gobierno inició una serie de proyectos de empleo rural que, junto con una alta demanda de empleo en los países del Medio Oriente, ha generado fuentes de empleo más permanentes para los trabajadores rurales. La migración de un gran número de trabajadores hacia las ciudades aumentó la proporción del ingreso rural no-agrícola en el ingreso familiar rural.
