Abstract
"This research report presents the findings of a two-year project dedicated to the development and refinement of methods for extracting structured information from job advertisements. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) as part of the German government’s Data Lab initiative, using resources from the European Union’s “NextGenerationEU” program. It builds upon the “Feasibility Study Competence Compass” (Stops et al., 2020). As part of this project, the project team created a dataset based on the universe job advertisements received by the Federal Employment Agency (BA) between April 2019 and December 2023, either published on the BA’s job portal or associated with a placement mandate for the BA. Comparisons with the IAB Job Vacancy Survey indicate that this dataset enables analyses representative of the German labor market for many research questions. We describe trends in the demand for professional competencies, language skills, and skills related to artificial intelligence technologies and hydrogen technology. Additionally, we examine the availability of home-office opportunities. The report concludes with an outlook on potential future directions for both substantive and methodological advancements in research using job advertisement data."
