Abstract

Shelf space is a scarce resource in retailing industry. We study here the issue of its allocation between the different producers within the assortment. We adopt a game theoretic approach as it allows accounting for the whole complexity of the allocation decision. The market structure consists in one retailer and two producers (a leader and a follower). Results of the model are tested using a database describing the assortments of a large French retail. Empirical analysis supports the theoretical specification.
