Abstract

Cities are facing two major challenges: climate change (increase in extreme events) and the growth in the urban population (increase in the vulnerability of these areas). These two challenges are particularly important in flood risk management. Many studies have shown that an integrated flood management strategy should involve citizens. We propose a tool that enables citizens to think about flood risk and its management in their living area. It is based on an original approach, combining sketch maps, game and agent-based simulation. In this approach, participants are invited to draw protection structures related to flooding. The drawn elements are "agentified" into an agent-based model able to simulate flood and assess the strategy drawn by the participants. It results in a score which can be compared with those of other participants. This approach allows both to assess the participants' perception on flood risk management and to enable them to reflect on the flood management strategies.
