Le projet Food-Sec Semence et les filières semencières aux Seychelles pour le maïs, le manioc et le haricot

he specific aim of the Food-Sec Semence project (2021-2025) in the Indian Ocean is to improve farmers' access to quality seeds and seedlings. In the Seychelles, the project focuses on three crops: maize, cassava and beans. This report presents the results obtained by the team in charge in the Seychelles and the work carried out during a support mission by CIRAD's agro-economist in November 2022, with interviews with the main players in the sectors concerned. After recalling the context and importance of the agricultural sector, this report presents the place of the plants concerned in farm cropping systems and current seed supply and distribution systems. The analysis leads to the conclusion that there is a real need for the country to have access to good quality seeds in sufficient quantities and adapted to the conditions required to ensure local production. However, for the plants selected within the framework of the project, the quantities used and imported are "modest" and seem insufficient to justify setting up a seed system specific to Seychelles, with seed multiplication, control and certification. To meet the challenges ahead, it would be worthwhile participating in an effective regional system.
