Abstract

Although linked by the study of a common object, empirical approaches for measuring income and wealth inequalities and macroeconomic approaches seem to have developed in a relatively disjointed manner. In this article, we return to the origins and developments of these two literatures. We show how their recent developments open up the possibility of a fruitful dialogue and illustrate it with the work of Auray et al. (2022), who study the explanatory factors of income and wealth inequalities in France since 1984. Using a model with heterogeneous agents and counterfactual analyses, this work highlights the key role of the increase in market power of companies, reforms of the socio-fiscal system and differentiated variations in asset prices on the dynamics of inequalities.
