Abstract

We show that bank money is characterized by its embeddedness in the debt market, making it a properly capitalist form of money. Analysing its intrinsic instability, we construct the theoretical problem of its reproduction and show that only the institutional equilibria of a mode of regulation can temporarily respond to it, until its internal contradictions prevail. The study of twentieth-century France then provides a case study of such an institutionalist approach, allowing us to discuss the circuitists' confidence in endogenous money.
